Calm Under Pressure - Workshop
Thank you to everyone who attended the “Calm Under Pressure” Speaking workshop this weekend! It was wonderful to host Pen2Podium’s first in-person event. I’m very grateful to all the students and parents who showed interest in the event and participated through the drills and by asking such insightful questions. In this session we focused on how to overcome one of the biggest limiting factors anyone who has had to speak in public has faced: Stage Fright. From class presentations and socratic seminars to speeches given competitively, the fear of freezing, your mind going blank, and not knowing what to say make public speaking something people end up dreading. Just some of the key points we went over: - Focus on understanding concepts over memorizing scripts. When you memorize word for word, your focus goes to remembering the next words which is the ROOT CAUSE for your mind going blank. Rather, understand the concepts you are presenting and follow an outline, not a script word for word. - Confident body language can trick your brain into thinking this is a less stressful scenario. Take up space and relax when you take the stage. - YOU know there is a script to follow, the people watching usually don't. So to you it might seem like you are “messing up” but no one else can tell. - Being holistically well informed by reading, keeping up with current events, and studying topics that interest you will help you be confident in any conversation or presentation. And so much more! I am looking forward to hosting more events like this in the Cinco Ranch Library soon.
